My Wedding Invitation Suite

When chatting with clients about wedding invitations, there is always one question that never fails to come up: “How did you do your wedding invitation?” It’s a pretty fun question that I love to answer, and there is definitely a story behind it! Here’s the story… of a lovely lady… 

Kidding. We shall not be singing the ever-so-catchy Brady Bunch song!

I digress. Back to the invitation!

My husband (“Mr. Architect”) is a very wonderful designer in the great big world of architecture. He works for a large national & international firm here in Seattle, and they build really big stuff. They have lots of clean lines, interesting materials, and strive to be both lean and sustainable. My husband LOVES what he does, so naturally… he loves design! Unlike a lot of grooms-to-be, my husband had just as big of an opinion in every single wedding decision (except my dress, of course), including our invitations!

We got married before I launched Songbird Paperie, but, I had (and still have) a passionate love affair with the Paper Source, so naturally, we got our invitations done there. They’re pretty awesome in that you can have some creative freedom and edit their designs (as long as you have the proper design software), and come up with something that is all your own. AND they offer letterpress, which was a total must-do for our wedding!

There’s a cute but embarrassing story why Mr. Architect calls me “Baby Bird”… but anyway, I like birds, we both are madly in love with penguins, so naturally birds were incorporated with our wedding invites! And it was totally perfect that the logo for our wedding venue is a hummingbird. It was like a match made in heaven!

Our wedding invitation is definitely on the extreme side of things. The amount of paper involved was amazing — outer envelope, inner envelope, envelope liner, enclosure with tulle-y and silk ribbon with a die cut bird, mounted invitation, RSVP card, envelope, and info card. PHEW.

Notice something familiar in the color scheme? That’s right — Songbird Paperie’s signature colors! Aqua and chocolate brown! Now, I had really wanted pink (my ultimate favorite color) as a secondary (heck, even tertiary!) wedding color, but Mr. Architect said no way Jose. But even without pink… the colors were soooo luxurious and fabulous. 

We had so much fun at our wedding, and our guests did too! Oh, if you’re getting married in the Bay Area, you MUST use Ron Grandia as your wedding DJ and MC. He put the “party” in… party… haha! He’s amazing. I should probably tell him that.

Using the birds on our invitation made it so romantic! Matt did a great job designing those birds, and they gave our invitation that extra special touch.

WEDDING INVITATION TIP + PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Be careful when using first name initials for your invitations! Mr. Architect and I decided that putting M before R was a not-so-good idea… it’s like having a giant “Mr.” on the invite!

RSVP cards are always a little tricky. We wanted to make it easy for our guests to properly fill it out, but still keep on point with the formality of the invitation, while making it easy on us when determining how much to order of what entree. Luckily, I loved the serif text (Bodidota), so I didn’t mind all of the text!

We completely designed our own info card and did not utilize Paper Source’s services for it. Looking back I probably would have wanted to also make this piece letterpress, or at least print on the same paper as the rest of the wedding invitation suite. But, I think it turned out beautifully regardless! Mr. Architect designed and produced the whole card — I was busy hand lettering 250 inner and outer envelopes!

This was a fun splurge – envelope liners! I love love love love love — did I mention love? — envelope liners!! We went with the same chocolate brown. So much fun!

And that is Mr. Architect’s and my wedding invitation suite! Photographing these pieces made me so nostalgic… that was the most wonderful day, the happiest day, the sunniest day, and the funnest day ever.
